NSW Sentencing Council
Members of the Council include people involved in the process of justice ranging from victims of crime to legal professionals. Representatives of the general community, including those with experience in working with victims, are also members.
The Council is dedicated to strengthening public understanding and confidence in the sentencing process. To improve the public’s confidence in the sentencing process, the Council provides an education program including public forums on sentencing and a plain language guide to sentencing in NSW.
The Council is reviewing standard minimum non-parole periods. A consultation paper has been released for community consultation. Responses are due by 25 October 2013.
The Governement has asked the Council to expedite its consideration of standard minimum non-parole periods for sexual offences against children. Comments are needed on this issue by 11 October 2013.
